Wagon pax side door stopped working

5530 Views 28 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Chillis
Hello Metris owners. I have been an owner since December and my Metris Wagon 8 seater is up to 140,000 miles and change.

While on vacation this week one of my employees informs me the pax side sliding door no longer works.

Tried all of the tricks from the manual and no dice.

Oddly, not even a dash light or computer message.

Not sure when it will be back to the shop to have a look but the fuse is good and has power.

Any ideas?

my first thought is to check that the child safety switch is in the proper position.
With that much driving I guess you've done the services at dealers/yourself every month? I doubted you've had time to do it yourself for your business so you've spent some where around $30,000 in a year: my head is spinning.
That's illogical. 10 months = 14k miles a month = 450 miles a day. Assuming an 18 hour work day, that's 25 mph average.

You have to be some kind of a taxi to get even close to that. But taxis have a lot of down time.
200,000 miles in a year on this Tesla used as a limo doing round trips between LA and Las Vegas. So, yeah "some kind of taxi". Perhaps OP uses his to move workers around.

I had to double look at the OP when he said 140k miles. Wow. Besides the door issue, I'd love to hear how the Metris has served him with usage like that.
Tours.

Usually 600 mile days.

Child safety lock played with and no affect on door function.

I take my Metris to an independent shop that exclusively works on Mercedes and they charge me 35% of what the dealer does on A services and half of the B service amount.
Guess what fellow Metris owners? Fixing the door that stopped working will cost just over $3000.

Needless to say, this vehicle will be the only Mercedes I purchase.

Too bad the auto doors cannot be used manually.

I have a Chrysler Town and Country with 234,000 miles and it lost an alternator but all electronics have worked flawlessly.
Sorry to hear that! Did they tell you what parts failed and why? I had asked my dealer about recommended maintenance for the doors as the owner's manual only covers the manual doors and was told that they didn't have anything to recommend.

The latching mechanism completely froze and the gear drive assembly stripped.

Need to go pay them a visit to see.

$1100 parts
$1600 labor
10 hours labor or so. ****. I'd do it for half that. Having said that, I don't know what's involved. And aligning that big ******* sucks.
I wouldn't have bought power doors in the first place. They ain't exactly heavy to roll.

Was their an option on the wagon?

I purchased the one on the lot with options I liked. Didn't realize there was a manual door version.
This definitely needs to be considered when owning a Metris. All these types of luxuries end up costing more than they are worth. A good example is the folding sunroof on my B200. When it fails it better fail in the closed position
Yeah, it was a $700 option per side, and I don't think it actually let you order it with only one side powered, so it's $1400.

I've never been a big fan of power doors or soft closing. Part of the fun of owning a German car is slamming the doors shut, after all.

Brian: I know you don't particularly like me, and that's cool and all. One understands one not being liked if one wishes to not only strongly hold opinions that are not always the default, but express them as well. But do you think you can refrain from following my posts you think pointless with at least equally pointless posts designating them so?
It's not that you don't have good input - this latest one is a great example. It's informative - it ADDS something and answers post #16 re: costs and availability.

But your quip in post #14 is worthless and judgmental. YOU may not have bought the power doors, but someone else - for an endless myriad of possibilities - might want or NEED them.

But whatever - it's not like we're curing cancer here.
I'm not sure the extended warranty will cover this problem at 140K miles in a year but thinking to buy it now: is it still possible while I bought mine last November?
