I'd posted awhile ago about my use of Home Depot shelving units to make a bed platform for my 2016 Metris passenger van with the Euro-style fold down seats. That experience was good, but wanted a platform that maximized the space available underneath the bed platform. My two biggest problems were: 1) I'm not very handy and 2) I didn't want to spend a fortune.

I really liked 80/20 aluminum, but I just couldn't see getting anything done for less than $700-800.

I ended up with a Frankenstein build of 2x6, steel plates and steel legs, with galvanized decking (used in shelving) using nuts and bolts to assemble it. Cost of materials was around $300. Everything off Amazon, except where noted.
---------------------------------------
Parts used in the build:
1 - 20' Kiln Dried 2x6 - $22.75 (Ganahl lumber)
8 - 4" in Steel Plates - $31.97 (10 total but 2 I didn't use)
25 - 3/8"-16 X 2-1/2" Stainless Hex Head Bolt, Fully Threaded, 18-8 Stainless Steel - $13.92
50 - 3/8” x 7/8” OD Stainless EPDM Washers, (50 pc) Neoprene Backed - $7.28
3/8"-16 X 2-1/4" (25pc) Stainless Hex Head Bolt, Fully Threaded, 18-8 Stainless Steel $13.87
3/8"-16 Stainless Hex Nut (100 Pack), 304 18-8 Stainless Steel Nuts - $14.18
3/8" Stainless Flat Finish Washer 7/8" OD (100pc), 18-8 (304) Stainless Steel - $7.64
4 Steel legs off Etsy - SteelImpression - $142

And Galvanized Decking - 2 pieces, one 48" x 48", one 24" x 48" - $48.65 (Zoro.com)

How long is the platform? I'm wondering what the distance is from the back of the seats to the back door?

Platform is 51" long. There's still room between the back of the platform and the rear hatch. The second question is hard to answer since I had the adjustable rails installed. The goal was to have the seats far enough back to be comfortable for an adult to sit in and have leg room (with the possibility of having swivels installed on the front seats). The Vito style seats fold over, which the other piece of wire shelving will be extended over. Still working on that part.

The one thing I may yet adjust is the legs are maybe 1" taller than would be perfect. But I'll probably take it for a run first before doing anything permanent. ;-)
