I Love the unit so far (compared to my Joying 10.1 unit it replaced), but the trim is made from a MUCH less resilient material than factory. First time trying to remove it and it cracked in three places. A new trim is on the way. Here are some pics. The ac vent needs to be re assembled in these pics fyi.

Apart from the vast increase in the size of screen, is there any additional functionality from the head unit. I note that it has a video icon in the top menu. Does it play video direct from your phone via cable or via USB or via streaming service ?

Thanks for taking the risk and showing us how it looks.

How do android apps look on it? Do they think is landscape or portrait?

From the AliExpress listing for the last bullet:

"Do I need to pay custom duties?

we do not pay any tax and fee. The price on aliexpress does not include customs tax and fee if it happens. Customer should pay it by himself, if you do not agree, please do not buy to avoid troubles . The custom duties are charged by importing countries. Though we can't control this, we will help you to declare a lower value at customs. Therefore most of our customers do not need to pay custom duties or just pay few. If you have special requirements for declared value, please explain to us when you place orders. Canavie will try the best to help our customer to minimize the risk of paying taxes"

So brazenly ignoring the law it's almost charming, like Uber, Airbnb, Lime and all the rest of the so-called "sharing" economy.

But I digress.

Why would I EVER gamble $799 of my hard earned Simoleons on a Chinese website, and unknown seller with no (yes, zero, zip, nada) documentation other than the sales promo here?

Better odds on the "loose slots" at the Morongo Casino after your kid's old E250, barely chugging as you endure the 9 month wait for your Metris, overheats again on the Banning Grade.

This is the one I purchased.
KiriNavi Vertical Screen Tesla Style Android 6.0 12.1 Inch Car Radio Dvd For Mercedes Vito 2 Din Gps Navigation Multimedia.

It was purchased through ebay. It is very cool, but it does have a few Bugs. The harness was wrong ( I had to provide them with a correct pinout to create a correct one), the plastic bezel is super fragile (the tabs that lock in are super tight and it will snap into pieces when trying to remove it.), and it does not come with any manual or wiring diagram of ANY sort. Do not forget that customer support is only during Chinese business hours and shipping takes two weeks minimum if something is needed. I am a Consumer Electronics based technician and even I have felt like throwing my hands up in the air a few times.
As a note: all of my frustrations could have been avoided with a simple wiring harness pinout... I have asked multiple times... I usually get pictures or a video, but never a simple wiring diagram! It is almost comical!

Hello! Thanks for sharing your experience. It seems strange, there are so many units on Ali and none installed with a photo report besides yours. I would like to ask about your current opinion. Especially to find out how factory rear camera was fitted (if you have any), how convenient is volume control without wheel buttons? What about the speed of the touchscreen and the screen itself?

BTW, browsing on Ali I found another interesting Android device, the screen is smaller but it doesn't require dismantling factory trim and I have doubts that such big screen of 12" is really handy. Plus it has some physical buttons as well.

I would not bother with that unit. 1gb ram. You are better off with one of the 10" universal models running Oreo with a P5 and at least 2gb or ram. Xtrons, Joying etc. Yes, it is tempting to get a model that has a fascia for the vehicle, but many times those model have poor specs and support.

If you have never owned an android head unit it's worth it to get a more mainstream brand.

What do you think about the Joying JY-UO135N4G?

4GB ram/32GB memory, octocore processor, android 8.1 (Oreo), 7" double-din so shouldn't stick out, and with built in 4G you wouldn't have to purchase a separate hotspot or enable it on your phone every time in order for online GPS/traffic to work.

I haven't used it. I'm personally less inclined to use any built in 4g. I run mine through a real wifi router in the car with 4g so I can control traffic to and from the unit. I don't want to discourage you though. Give it a try.

I don't do anything other than the 10" units because they fit most cars and really make the whole thing very useful.

Do you have to wait for the hotspot to power up and everything to connect? One thing I like about at least SOME of the Joyings is that they showed it had enough battery power to fire up from standby if left off for less than a week, and then in theory the 4G should connect right away. I actually even have hotspot functionality on my phone, but seems like a hassle to do it every time.

Seven inches is plenty big for this girl. :)

There is a whole world of hacking these things with alternate firmware. There is a wide range of CPU combinations and combinations of board/amp functionality. It can actually take a lot of time to run through all the models to figure out what you want/need when you understand the differences. There are thousands of forums posts over at XDA Developers if you feel like wading through it all. I have because I've messed with the firmware. https://forum.xda-developers.com/android-auto

The Intel based systems have fewer hacks, but offer some functions like sleep/fast startup times.

In real world experiences the boot time is perfectly acceptable in the units that take the longest to boot.

Honestly, pick any unit with Android 8.1 with at least 2g of ram and try it. There are models on Amazon so you can safely buy and return.
